Social CommitmentMETRO GROUP's success is linked to a sound social environment. The goal is to strengthen the attractiveness and performance of the company's locations, as well as the stakeholders' trust. That's the reason behind METRO GROUP's commitment to numerous social projects and initiatives.
As one of the largest food retailing companies, METRO GROUP can help ensure that people in need regularly receive healthy food. That is why the stores of METRO GROUP's sales divisions Metro Cash & Carry, Real and Galeria Kaufhof support the work of the food banks by making available large quantities of food every year. These goods are faultless in terms of quality but can no longer be sold in the stores due to their expiry dates.
Also in countries other than Germany METRO GROUP increasingly supports the idea of the food banks. Metro Cash & Carry donates food at an international level in cooperation with partnered charity organisations. Beginning of 2009 Real Poland, in conjunction with the Association of Polish food banks launched the "Points for People in Need" project. Since then, the roughly two million participants of the Real loyalty programme have been able to convert their points into food donations. Real passes this on to charity organisations, to help those in need eat better and healthier. Also in Turkey Real is already a reliable partner for the local food bank.
In June 2008, Galeria Kaufhof took advantage of Germany's Day of the Visually Handicapped to draw attention to the specific needs of visually handicapped people. As an example, an information event held at 20 branch stores enabled customers to use a special set of eyeglasses to experience what it is like to go shopping when you are visually handicapped. All Galeria Kaufhof stores offer free shopping assistance to blind and visually handicapped people, as a way of supporting their self-reliance. A sales employee provides guidance through the company's worlds of merchandise.
Since 2006, METRO GROUP has been supporting a project launched by the Turkish CYDD Foundation, which gives socially disadvantaged girls the opportunity to go to school. In rural parts of Turkey, this is not something that is taken for granted. Initially, the company assumed the school fees for 100 girls in the town of Mus and provided school supplies and clothing. Since then, METRO GROUP, working in partnership with the local Turkish Metro Cash & Carry companies and METRO AG, has expanded its support to 1,000 schoolgirls. In future, METRO GROUP plans to further expand the aid programme for schoolgirls and to continue supporting the project over the long term.
