Every year, several thousand runners participate in the METRO GROUP Marathon, the biggest sport event in Düsseldorf. Through its commitment as the title sponsor of this popular marathon, METRO GROUP is demonstrating its close ties with the state capital in Düsseldorf, the Group’s domicile. METRO GROUP is represented amongst the Metro runners by its own team. The Metro marathon team with its red jerseys has been a solid institution among the company’s employees at the Düsseldorf location since 2003.
With its financial commitment to the DEG METRO STARS, METRO GROUP is making its contribution towards promoting the hockey club. In so doing, it not only supports professional sports, but also the youth work performed by the club.
From 16 to 21 June 2008, METRO GROUP in Karlsruhe supported the German Special Olympics through its two sales brands, Real and Galeria Kaufhof. Special Olympics International is the world’s biggest sport movement for people with mental and multiple physical handicaps. The mission of the Special Olympics is to use the medium of sport to improve social acceptance of mentally handicapped people.
Real and Galeria Kaufhof served as official sponsors of the Summer Games and together contributed a total of EURO 100,000. In addition, since 2004, METRO GROUP trainees have helped to organise meals for 3,500 athletes, trainers and supporters in the Olympic Village.
Since spring 2006, the METRO GROUP has been presenting works of art from the Metro Sculpture Park Foundation on the group's premises in Düsseldorf, Germany.
The exhibits are a "legacy" which the METRO GROUP inherited from the takeover of Horten AG in the 90s. The Metro Foundation Sculpture Park takes the role of a model for city architectural design representing the coexistence of work, trade and art.
Moreover, the foundation promotes contemporary arts and culture in Düsseldorf. Under the patronage of the District President and in cooperation with the regional capital Düsseldorf and key representatives of the Düsseldorf arts scene, the METRO GROUP allows mainly young visual artists to present their works to a large audience.
Furthermore, the foundation awards scholarships to eligible artists and takes on the organization of presentations and exhibitions.

Since 2001, METRO GROUP has been the chief sponsor of the kunst palast museum’s exhibition programmes. In this capacity, the company supports the capital of North-Rhine Westphalia in its efforts to create a vital, many-faceted art scene of world-class stature.
Exhibitions such as "Caravaggio" in 2006 and "Bonjour, Russia" in 2007 ranked among the highlights on the German art calendar.
For more than 10 years now, METRO GROUP has been the main sponsor of the Benrath Palace Music Festival.
Since 1994, the Klassik Konzertgesellschaft has organised two open-air concerts every summer in the park of the Benrath Palace. The park and the palace are illuminated in a manner suited to each concert. In addition, the festival features water shows and fireworks.
